Bernlohr Brace Helps Cardinals to 3-3 Draw at Stevenson

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Catholic University men's soccer team played to a draw with Stevenson on Saturday evening in a match that saw six goals scored.

Junior Gordie Bernlohr netted a brace for the Cardinals, pushing his season total to a team-high five goals.

He got the scoring started in the 14th minute. After great work from Ben Zimmer to win the ball back in the defensive third, Catholic broke quickly through Bernlohr on the left. After a brilliant switch of play found Jack McEvoy, he laid it off to Liam Giblin, whose one-time cross found its way to Bernlohr at the back post. After gathering and cutting inside, he was able to finish past the Mustangs goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Owen Maher doubled the Cardinal lead in the 17th minute when he nodded home from a Ryan Bradby corner. However, the two-goal advantage would be short-lived, as Stevenson halved the deficit less than two minutes later.

The Mustangs climbed back into the match, finding the equalizer in the 51st minute when Edsen DeMata Ribeiro scored directly from a free kick from just outside the penalty area.

Maher, who was booked for the foul that led to the goal, then brought down a Stevenson attacker in the penalty area in the 62nd minute and was sent off for a second yellow card. DeMata Ribeiro made no mistake with the spot kick as he claimed his brace and put the Mustangs ahead 3-2.

The Cardinals battled back to equalize with a brilliant bit of play in the 67th minute. The sweeping move began when defender Alex Reardon sprayed a ball out wide to Andrew Lowman. Lowman then found Zimmer in the inside-left channel, who produced a delicate flick that found its way to Bernlohr. The junior then sliced into the penalty area and finished past the goalkeeper and two defenders after some brilliant balance and footwork to keep the ball.

Catholics now sits at 3-0-3 on the season. This is the first time that the team has opened a campaign unbeaten in its first six matches in Travis Beauchamp's 16 seasons as head coach.

The Cardinals will look to push the streak to seven when they make the short trip to Long Bridge Park on Wednesday to do battle with the Saints of Marymount (Va.). Kickoff in the match that will count toward the Pope's Cup standings is slated for 7 p.m.
