Cardinals Down Shorewomen, Win Third Straight in Stunning Style

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior Liv Canterino scored the game-winning goal as the Catholic University field hockey team defeated Washington College on Wednesday evening in what will go down as an instant classic.

The Cardinals scored in the last minute of regulation to push the game into overtime, then scored in the sixth minute of the extra period to knock off the Shorewomen, 3-2.

Catholic trailed for over 49 minutes of the contest, but would not be defeated, as Ashley Martin finished from close range after a redirection from Niki Micciche fell to her stick with just 20 seconds left to play.

The Cardinals looked the more likely team to score throughout the entirety of the match, outshooting Washington College 26-7. Catholic put 17 of those shots on target, but Shorewomen goalkeeper Ava Rivera repelled 13 while defender MaryCate Anson also made a defensive save in the second quarter.

Catholic went behind 10 minutes into the contest, when Kat Esposito beat Abigail Kearney following a penalty corner.

It would take Catholic until the fourth quarter to find the equalizer, when Kellie Caputo was first to react to a rebound in close after Rivera made a save. The Cardinal lead would last just 35 seconds, though, as Washington College responded immediately off the restart to reclaim its advantage.

The Shorewomen did their best to squeeze the game and hang on to its lead, and did well, not allowing Catholic to offer a single shot between second Washington College goal and the final minute of regulation. However, Catholic was able to earn two penalty corners with less than a minute left on the clock, the first drawing a save out of Rivera, and the second resulting in Martin's equalizer.

The Cardinals took advantage of another penalty corner in overtime, as Mary Parker fired in a shot-cross directly across the face of goal and Canterino was waiting at the back post to tap in to an empty net. All three Cardinal goals came from penalty corner situations.

The victory marks the third in a row for Catholic and the second in succession in overtime. The Cardinals now sit at 3-2 on the season, with their two losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents.

Catholic will look to continue the momentum and push its win streak to four on Saturday, when it welcomes Ursinus to Cardinal Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
