Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. - Catholic University baseball senior Matt Tesoriero totaled two hits and picked up his third save in a 7-4 victory over Ithaca Sunday in the Super Regionals of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
The Cardinals (33-14) posted their first-ever victory in the Super Regionals and forced a winner take all game three to decide who will go to the Division III College World Series.
Tesoriero went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored before entering to pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth. After Buzz Shirley reached on a fielding error to load the bases, Tesoriero recorded the final out himself when Nicholas Cutaia grounded out to the pitcher forcing a third and deciding game.
Thanks to a four-run second, Catholic jumped out to a 5-0 lead, highlighted by a two-run single from junior Zach Burton before senior Peter Giombetti hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
It was the 15th home run of the season for Giombetti, adding to his single-season school record. It also marked the 18th of his career, leaving him one shy of tying the program set by Brennan Cotter.
Meanwhile, senior Jack Zaffiro, who finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts, did not allow a hit through five innings. He allowed just four in 6.1 innings before being relieved by sophomore Cormac Terry.
The Bombers (34-13), who fell for just the third time in 14 home games this season, scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to cut their deficit to one, 5-4.
However, freshman Lucas Malave and graduate student Billy Duke hit back-to-back doubles in the eighth to add two insurance runs.
Malave finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, driving in the team's first run with an sacrifice fly in the second. Freshman Matthew Fisher also hat two hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI-single.
Freshman Dante Pozzi drew a walk in five plate appearances to extend his on-base streak to 40 games.
Game three of the Super Regionals between Catholic and Ithaca will begin at approximately 2:45 p.m.
