Catholic Completes 2026 Campaign Against Marymount

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – The Catholic baseball team wrapped up its season on Saturday afternoon with another contest against Marymount (Va.). The Saints hung a crooked number in the second inning to grab a lead that they would not relinquish, defeating the Cardinals 8-4.

The Saints strung together five hits in the second frame and brought four runs to the plate while also being aided by a two-out error to get ahead 4-0. The Cardinals got two runners on base in the bottom of the inning after Jack Elwell and Taig McErlane both singled but they could not push across a run.

Marymount pushed the lead out to six in the top of the fourth with RBIs from Tyler Woodring and Francis Swekosky to make it a 6-0 ballgame. Rowan Griffith Catholic on the scoreboard with style when he launched his second home run of the season to left field to help try to chip away at the deficit.

After the Saints scored two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a comfortable lead, Coen Devillier entered the game from the bullpen for the Cardinals and tossed two solid innings while only allowing one hit with a strikeout. Jack Scholz also was sharp in relief for Catholic as he also worked through two shutout innings with three punch outs.

Catholic scratched across another run in the bottom of the eighth after a single from Mark Villanueva led-off the frame. Matthew Fisher later drove him in with a single to center field to cut the deficit to six. Parker Shenman notched his first career RBI in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly into center field before Daniel Nellum added another run with a base hit into right field to pull the Cardinals within four. Catholic put the tying run in the on deck circle, but were unable to complete the comeback, falling to Marymount 8-4. The Cardinals finish the season with a 21-16 record.
