Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. - Catholic and Ithaca combined for just 10 hits, but the Bombers used four extra-base hits to post a 4-0 victory Saturday in Super Regionals of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at Freeman Field.
The Cardinals (32-14), who fell for just the fourth time in the last 12 games, were limited to just four hits and hampered by four errors.
Graduate student Tighe Watson was 2-for-3 and now has four hits in six at-bats over his last two starts. Senior Matt Tesoriero finished 1-for-4 with a double to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.
Meanwhile, freshman Dante Pozzi extended his on-base streak to 39 games after reaching on a fielder's choice in the top of the third.
Kyle Lambert posted the first shutout of the season for Ithaca (34-12), totaling 135 pitches and scattering four hits over 8.0 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Lambert's counterpart, junior Tucker Alch, threw 74 pitches and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three over 6.0 innings.
Buzz Shirley led the Bombers offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, solo home run, two walks and two runs scored. In the bottom of the first, he hit a two-out double to left before scoring during the next at-bat on an RBI-single through the left side by Nicholas Cutaia.
Shirley doubled Ithaca's lead during his next at-bat with a solo home run to right with on a two-out, two-strike pitch in the third.
The Bombers added their third run in the seventh on a Catholic error before capping the scoring on an RBI-double down the left field line by Matt Fabian in the eighth.
Junior Brendan Martin made his first appearance of the NCAA postseason, allowing just two hits and one earned run over the eighth and ninth. He also struck out one.
Game two of the best-of-three series will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday where the Cardinals will be the home team.
