Koehn's Career Day Powers Cards to Fifth-Straight Win

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Fifteen different players reached base as the Catholic University baseball team flew past cross-town rival Gallaudet, 18-4, in seven innings on Wednesday night at Hoy Field.

The Cardinals (20-6, 6-0 LC) have now won five games in a row and 18 of their last 20.

Catholic got off to the perfect start, plating eight runs before Gallaudet (5-19) had the opportunity to bat. Junior Nick Koehn came through with the bases loaded, slapping an    0-2 pitch into center field for a two-RBI single. Graduate student Tighe Watson followed immediately with a two-RBI double before freshman Dante Pozzi blasted his second home run of the season over the left-field fence to score two more and cap the eight-run first.

The Cardinals added four in the second, three in the third and three in the fourth to go up 18-0 before the Bison plated two in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth.

Catholic used 13 different pitchers, with none working more than 1.0 inning. Senior Nick Marini started the game for the Cardinals, allowing no hits and striking out one in the opening frame. He earned his first win of the season on the mound.

Sophomore Camden Mounts, senior Nick Dziuba and senior Colin Kehoe each worked 0.2 innings, striking out both batters they faced.

Koehn led the way with a career day offensively. He drove in a career-high seven runs and registered an RBI in each of his first four plate appearances. On the day, he went 3-for-4 with two singles, one triple, a sacrifice fly, seven RBIs and two runs scored.

Senior Peter Giombetti and Pozzi extended their streak of safely reaching base to 18 and 19 games, respectively.

Freshman Justin McCarthy also posted a new career high in the RBI category, going         2-for-3 at the plate with a single, a double, three RBIs and one run scored. Senior Jason Xiong registered his first RBI of the season with a double in the fourth inning and scored two runs. Freshman Joe Marini went 1-for-2 in the batter's box with a single, a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Bison starting pitcher Frank Diaz got the loss after pitching 3.0 innings, dropping him to 0-3 on the season.

Catholic has now won 40 straight over the Bison, a streak that dates back to April 6, 1991.

The Cardinals look to continue their momentum and remain undefeated against Landmark Conference opponents this weekend, when they travel to Bethlehem to face Moravian. The three-game set will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9. First pitch in game one at Gillespie Field is scheduled for noon.
