SCRANTON, Pa. — The Catholic University men's tennis team came up just short against Scranton on Saturday, dropping the Landmark Conference contest, 5-4.
The Cardinals (3-6, 1-4 LC) could not get over the line, seeing two matches go against them in deciding tiebreaks.
The No. 1 doubles pair of sophomore Allan Van Nostrand and junior Juan Gomez fell after 14 games was not enough to decide the match. They were unable to win the tiebreak, falling 7-8 in the match and 4-7 in the tiebreak.
Senior Emmett Lee came as close as you can to winning a match without triumphing, losing two sets in tiebreaks (6(5)-7, 7-5, 6(2)-7).
Gomez and senior David Brennan won their singles matches comfortably, Gomez at No 2 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Brennan at No. 5 singles (6-2, 6-2).
Freshman Ben Perks battled to win a tight match at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set by a break, he took the second and eventually won the third, breaking Sal Sullivan right at the end to secure the win (4-6, 6-3, 7-5).
Perks combined with junior Matt Rudolf to win at No. 3 singles, defeating Wes Jacaruso/John Sinclair, 8-3.
Van Nostrand (No. 1; 2-6, 1-6) and Rudolf (No. 3; 3-6, 4-6) dropped their singles matches, and the duo of Brennan and senior James Schmalz fell at No. 2 doubles (5-8).
The Cardinals look to get back in the win column tomorrow, when they take on Landmark Conference rivals Drew. Opening service is scheduled for noon at the Drew Tennis Complex.
