WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's tennis team opened Landmark Conference play with a tight victory over Susquehanna, 5-4, at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (6-6, 1-0 LC) were led by senior Brooke Simonson, senior Liv Sensenbrenner and junior Abbey Cassidy, who each contributed to two wins respectively.
Simonson and Sensenbrenner took home a victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Susquehanna's team of Ashlynn Searer/Julie Bramley, 8-5.
Simonson faced off against Searer at No. 1 singles, winning comfortably in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Simonson remains undefeated at No. 1 singles during the spring season, stretching her individual win streak to six.
Sensenbrenner played at No. 3 singles, defeating River Hawk Anna Reem (6-2, 6-1) to secure another important victory for Catholic.
Cassidy came through a tightly-contested match at No. 2 singles, overcoming Bramley in straight sets after a second-set tiebreak (6-4, 7-6(2)).
Sophomore Marissa Stambaugh dropped an extremely close match at No. 4 singles, falling in a third-set tiebreaker. After dropping the first set by a break, she battled back to sweep the second set at love and force the final frame, where she ultimately fell 10-6.
On the doubles court, however, Stambaugh combined with Cassidy to dismiss Susquehanna's No. 2 doubles team of Grace Tepes/Reem (8-5).
Senior Josie Cost dropped a close match at No. 6 singles, falling in a third-set tiebreak (2-6, 6-1, 8-10), while junior Aubree Narus also fell short at No. 5 singles (2-6, 1-6). They combined on the doubles court, dropping the No. 3 doubles match, 4-8.
The Cardinals look to continue their momentum as they push through conference play. They will face Moravian next Saturday, April 9, on the Dowd Family Tennis Court. Opening service is set for noon.
