TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University women's tennis team dropped a Landmark Conference contest to Goucher on Wednesday, 8-1.
Senior Brooke Simonson claimed the sole victory for the Cardinals (6-9, 1-3 LC) at No. 1 singles, defeating Anais Dhillon in a thriller. Simonson battled back after dropping the first set to win the match in a third-set tiebreaker (3-6, 7-5, 10-8).
With the triumph, Simonson remains undefeated at No. 1 singles during the spring season, pushing her streak of victories to nine.
Simonson combined with junior Abbey Cassidy at No. 1 doubles, 3-8. Cassidy played at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 0-6.
Senior Olivia Sensenbrenner was on the wrong side of two tight losses. She combined with sophomore Marissa Stambaugh at No. 2 doubles, and the duo fell 6-8 after leading 6-3 in the match. On the singles court, she battled back after dropping the first set, but ultimately succumbed in a third-set tiebreak (3-6, 6-4, 7-10).
Stambaugh fell in straight sets at No. 4 singles (2-6, 1-6) while junior Aubree Narus dropped her match at No. 5 singles (3-6, 0-6) and senior Josie Cost also fell at No. 6 singles (2-6, 6(4)-7) after a tights second set.
Cost and Narus played together on the doubles court, dropping their match at No. 3 position, 2-8.
Catholic has a nine-day layoff before returning to action on Saturday, April 23 at Scranton against the rival Royals. Opening serve is set for 1 p.m.
