Box Score 2 ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Catholic University baseball team extended its winning streak to 11 before dropping the second game of a Saturday doubleheader to Lebanon Valley at McGill Field on Saturday.
Junior Tucker Alch was brilliant in the first game, combining with sophomore Ryan O'Keefe to complete the shutout.
Game 1: Catholic 8, Lebanon Valley 0
The Cardinals (15-6, 3-0 LC) were dominant in game one, pulling away from the Dutchmen as Alch did not allow a run. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, walking zero and striking out nine.
O'Keefe came in to pitch the seventh, allowing one hit and one walk and ultimate upheld the shutout. He struck out two.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth, when Catholic was able to push across two runs. Junior Zach Burton led off the inning by working a full-count walk before he went first to third on a single by junior Ben Nardi. Senior Peter Giombetti then drove in Burton with a single to center field to break the deadlock. Graduate student Billy Duke delivered an RBI groundout to score Nardi and put the Cardinals up 2-0.
Nardi stayed hot in the fifth, when he singled to center field with two outs to drive in junior Derek Zelesnick and freshman Dante Pozzi.
Catholic broke the game open in the sixth. Dutchmen pitching loaded the bases then walked freshman Matthew Fisher to force in a run. After a pitching change and a flyout, Zelesnick doubled down the left field line to drive in Duke and senior Matt Tesoriero. Burton then secured an RBI on a fielder's choice to put the Cardinals up 8-0, permanently.
Nardi went 3-for-4 with three singles, two RBIs and one run scored. Giombetti and Zelesnick both registered two hits.
Alch (4-1) earned the victory while Lebanon Valley starter Tanner Rock (1-3) suffered the loss.
Game 2: Lebanon Valley 20, Catholic 13
Catholic used seven pitchers and 29 total players overall in a high-scoring loss in the second game.
The Cardinals scored before the Dutchmen had an opportunity to bat, when Giombetti tripled down the right field line, scoring Pozzi in the top of the first.
Lebanon Valley then responded immediately with two in the bottom of the inning, getting to freshman starting pitcher Cody Bosak early.
Catholic would retake the lead in the third. After Burton hit a one-out double, Nardi singled to bring him home. Then, with two outs, Duke hammered his fourth home run of the season on an 0-2 count to blast the Cardinals into the lead, 4-2.
That would be the last time they led, however, as the Dutchmen came storming back with eight runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Bosak was forced out of the game with one out in the third, and was credited with five earned runs.
In total, Lebanon Valley scored 18 unanswered runs, adding four in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Catholic chipped away with two in the seventh, six in the eighth and one in the ninth, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Freshman Joe Marini hit his first career home run in the ninth inning, blasting a 3-1 pitch out down the right field line.
Seniors Nick Marini and Colin Kehoe were bright spots on the mound, each throwing 1.0 inning in relief, not allowing a run and striking out one. Marini did not allow a hit.
Bosak (0-1) suffered the defeat while Dutchmen starter Kyle Kingsbury (2-2) secured the win.
The Cardinals now turn their attention to a midweek game against Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Babb Field.
