Catholic Drops Two Games Against Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa.  – The Catholic baseball team finished its series against Susquehanna on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader, looking to get back in the win column. The River Hawks took both games off the Cardinals to complete a weekend sweep of the series.
GAME ONE - Susquehanna 4, Catholic 1

Charlie Belli worked through traffic on the bases in both the first and second innings but was able to work through it to keep the River Hawks off the board. The first run of the contest came with two outs in the bottom of the third when Dylan Heyduk hit a solo homer to right field to put Susquehanna up 1-0.

The lead was extended by Susquehanna in the bottom of the fourth after a lead-off double started the momentum. Another home run, this time a two-run shot from Paul Daly pushed the lead out to three for the River Hawks. The River Hawks tacked on another run to the lead in the bottom of the next frame with a two-out RBI double from Michael Gagliardi to make it a 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals scored their lone run of the game in the top of the eighth inning after Matt Perlin laced a one-out double down the left field line to put himself in scoring position. Perlin moved up to third on a failed pick off attempt and Daniel Tsimbinos drove him in with a sacrifice fly into center field to plate Catholic's first run.

Logan Potter and Quinn Gillen did a solid job out of the bullpen for Catholic, combining for two shutout innings without allowing a hit with Gillen notching a pair of strikeouts.

Lance Eilbacher drew a walk in the top of the ninth for the Cardinals to try to spark a rally, but they went down quietly in the inning to drop the first game, 4-1.

GAME TWO - Susquehanna 15, Catholic 9

The Cardinals started off the scoring in the second game in the top of the first inning after a drawing back-to-back walks to start things off. Chase Falcon poked a single back up the middle to bring Matthew Fisher to the plate to make it 1-0. The River Hawks quickly took momentum back in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a couple errors to score four runs to get on top, 4-1.

Catholic answered back in the top of the second after a walk from Chris Esquivel and a Perlin single put two runners on with one out. Gabriel Ruiz drove in the first run of the inning with a base hit to center field to bring in Esquivel and Sammy Burman picked up his first RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Susquehanna once again responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs on three hits to push the lead out to four.

The Cardinals fought back to tie the game in the top of the fifth, sparked by Falcon and Eilbacher recording a double and a single respectively to put two in scoring position with one out. The first run of the inning came in to score when Esquivel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, followed by Jack Bateman picking up a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to pull Catholic within one. Perlin tied the game up at seven with a single down the left field line to plate Esquivel. Once again, the River Hawks had an answer as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to storm out to a 14-7 lead, capped up by a three-RBI knock from Gagliardi.

The Cardinals were down to their final out in the top of the ninth when Burman launched a two-run shot to right field to make it a 15-9 game. It was Burman's fifth home run of the season which leads the team and is tied for the most in the conference. Susquehanna secured the final out of the game on the next batter to close out the sweep over Catholic.

Catholic is back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 31 when they take on Elizabethtown on the road. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm at Kevin Scott Boyd Memorial Stadium.
