WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic baseball team attempted to capture a conference series win against Lycoming on Sunday afternoon. After the pitching held both lineups in check over the first four innings, the Warriors offense found its footing in the next three innings, bringing 11 runs to the plate to come away with an 11-0 victory over the Cardinals to take the weekend series.
Charlie Belli came out of the gates firing on the mound for the Cardinals, setting down the first six batters he faced, five via ground outs and the other coming on a strike out. Catholic had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the second with one out after
Matthew Fisher singled and
Chris Esquivel was hit by a pitch. Lycoming got out of the jam however by inducing an inning ending double play to keep Catholic off the board. The Cardinals had another opportunity with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the third after
Jack Bateman led the frame off with a single into right field but AJ Llorente once again held the Cardinals in check by retiring the last two batters in the inning.
Belli dealt with two runners on a just one out in the top of the fourth and proceeded to pick up a key punch out for the second out. He then forced a fielder's choice ground out to third to prevent any damage in the inning.
A lead-off double in the top of the fifth set the Warriors up to push across the first run of the game and Miles Pealer immediately brought the runner in with a single back up the middle. An RBI double and an error allowed two more runs to score in the inning to give Lycoming a 3-0 lead.
After adding another run in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to four, Lycoming put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh when it scored seven runs on five hits while also drawing multiple walks to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Catholic went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh and Lycoming wrapped up a win.
The Cardinals are now 11-8 on the season and 2-5 in Landmark play with the loss on Sunday. Catholic will hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, March 25 for a Landmark contest against Juniata at 3 pm at Langdon-Goodale Field.
