Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Catholic University baseball team capped off an impressive spring break trip with two shutout wins over Ursinus on Saturday, 7-0 and 10-0.

The Cardinals (9-5) swept a doubleheader with back-to-back shutouts for the first time since April 30, 2016 when they won a Landmark Conference twinbill with Juniata at Nats Youth Academy, 3-0 and 6-0.

With the sweep, the Cardinals (9-5) finished their seven-game spring break trip with a record of 6-1.

Pitching was the story for Catholic as five pitchers combined to limit the Bears (5-7) to just four hits over 15.0 innings while striking out 26.

The Cardinals scored the only run they would need in the top of the third as junior Derek Zelesnick to stole home to give Catholic a 1-0 lead. Junior Ben Nardi followed with an RBI-single to score freshman Dante Pozzi.

Pozzi hit a scarifice fly in the fifth to score Zelesnick before graduate student Billy Duke added an RBI-double in the sixth as the Cardinals took a 5-0 lead.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh, freshman Sean O'Mara scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Matthew Fisher scored before freshman Lucas Malave capped the scoring on a Ursinus throwing error.

Duke went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI while Zelesnick was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game 2: Catholic 10, Ursinus 0 (8 innings)

Four Cardinal pitchers combined for the shutout in game two, allowing just three hits while striking out 14. Sophomore Cormac Terry got the win, scattering three hits over 5.0 innings and striking out seven.

Meanwhile, senior Jack Zaffiro, senior Nick Marini and junior Brendan Martin combined to strike out seven of the 10 batters they faced over the final three innings. Zaffiro struck out the side in the sixth, Marini struck out two in the seventh and Martin fanned two in the eighth.

Offensively, senior Peter Giombetti went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, including a solo home run to center in the fifth for his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

Catholic scored its first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI-double by senior Matt Tesoriero before exploding for five runs in the third, highlighted by Tesoriero's second RBI-double and an RBI-triple by senior Tommy Antonucci.

The Cardinals clinched the game with three runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBIs by junior Nick Koehn, freshman Justin McCarthy and freshman Jack Baldridge.

Tesoriero had two hits, two doubles and two RBIs as 10 different players had at least one hit for Catholic while seven had at least one RBI.
