Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. - Catholic University women's basketball junior Rachel Bussanich scored 21 points off the bench as the No. 18/23 Cardinals dropped a top-25 match-up to No. 16/17 Scranton Saturday, 72-68.
Catholic (19-4, 10-4 LC) concludes the regular season with 19 wins, just one shy its sixth 20-win season in the last 10 full seasons.
Bussanich posted her first 20-point game this season and the third of her career as she finished just three points shy of her career high. She went 8-of-12 from the floor while adding three rebounds and three assists.
Following back-to-back three-pointers by juniors Erin Thompson and Erin Doherty, the Cardinals led 58-50 with 7:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.
However, the Royals (23-2, 14-0 LC) used a 16-3 run to take a 66-61 advantage with 48 seconds to play before going 5-of-6 from the free throw line to seal their second undefeated Landmark Conference schedule in 15 seasons in the league.
Catholic led by as many as nine, 44-35, with 2:15 left in the third quarter following a three-pointer by sophomore Sarah White. The game featured 12 ties and six lead changes while the Cardinals scored 22 points off 21 Scranton turnovers.
Doherty finished with 15 points, all of which came on five three-pointers as she was 5-of-7 from three-point range. Thompson added nine while White had a season-high eight, three shy of her career high.
Catholic makes its 11th appearance in the Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday as it heads to Elizabethtown for the semifinals. It will mark the fifth time in the Cardinals' last seven appearances that they have faced off against the Blue Jays in the semifinals, but the first at Thompson Gymnasium.
