No. 20/24 Cardinals Fly Past Greyhounds on Senior Day

Washington, D.C. — The No. 20/24 Catholic University women's basketball team flew to a 82-65 home victory over Moravian on Senior Day.

With the victory, the Cardinals (19-2, 10-2 LC) move into a tie with Elizabethtown (18-4, 10-2 LC) for second place in the Landmark Conference. Elizabethtown fell to Scranton (21-2, 12-0 LC) 64-55 on Saturday. Catholic has one regular season game remaining against both Scranton and Elizabethtown.

Junior Rachel Bussanich set the tone for the Cardinals, recording a double-double in the first half, scoring 10 points and gathering 11 rebounds.

The game was tight throughout the first half and the teams went into the locker room knotted at 36. The Cardinals used a 37-20 run to pull away after the score was tied 45-45 midway through the third quarter.

Catholic shot at a 47 percent clip from the field in the second half, while junior Erin Thompson recorded all 11 of her points after halftime.

Junior Erin Doherty dropped a game-high 21 points, while senior Luca Mamula was one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 16 points and securing nine boards. 

Senior Amanda Johnson was dominant in all facets of the game, scoring nine points, grabbing eight rebounds, forcing one steal and dishing a career-high seven assists. Johnson shot 3-of-8 from three point range, including two key makes in situations when she beat the shot-clock buzzer.

Moravian was led by sophomore Sam Osorio, who posted a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Junior Emily Markowski scored a team-high 13 points. 

Maggie Bednarek, the third senior honored alongside Johnson and Mamula, added two points, one assist and one rebound. 

The Cardinals are next in action on Wednesday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Elizabethtown to face the Blue Jays in Thompson Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The Cardinals then conclude their regular season when they face Scranton on Saturday, Feb. 19 at John Long Center.
