Cardinals Use Stifling Second Half To Earn 56-44 Win At Eastern

Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - The Catholic University women's basketball team used a tremendous second-half effort to earn a comeback road victory over Eastern on Wednesday night. The Cardinals trailed by as many as nine and entered the halftime locker room down 27-20 before outscoring the Eagles by 19 in the second half of a 56-44 win.

The Cardinals were tremendous at the charity stripe, knocking down 21 free throws to overcome a tough first half from the field.

Trailing 27-20 after 20 minutes of action, Catholic immediately began to chip away in the third. Anna Scoblick scored the first points of the half after a Carly Mulvaney steal. Eastern answered, but Erin Doherty hit a three to get Catholic within four less than two minutes into the half.

At the 7:19 mark, Mulvaney hit a triple after a Keegan Douglas offensive rebound, and just like that, it was a two-point game. Back-to-back buckets from Mulvaney and Doherty sandwiched around an Eastern turnover tied the game at 32-32 with 5:34 to play in the quarter, marking the first tie of the game since 5-5.

With 3:51 to play in the third, Rachel Bussanich's layup put Catholic on top for the first time since they held a 5-3 lead at the 7:21 mark in the first quarter. Scoblick pushed the Catholic lead to four with 44 ticks left in the quarter, but Jeriyah Johnson scored for Eastern with three seconds left to cut the lead back to two.

After the game was tied once more, Mulvaney scored off a Doherty feed with 8:40 to play, putting Catholic back on top. The Cardinals never let the lead slip away, going on an 8-2 run to take a 48-40 lead with 3:21 left after another Bussanich layup.

With 41 seconds remaining, Doherty hit a pair of free throws, pushing the Cardinal lead into double figures for the first time. Douglas and Sammie McCarter each knocked down their free throws and the Cardinals iced out a 56-44 road win to improve to 6-1.

Doherty scored 15 points, hitting eight-of-10 free throws while stuffing the stat sheet with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Bussanich contributed a double-double with 12 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Mulvaney also worked her way into double figures with 10 points on four-of-eight shooting.

Eastern turned it over 24 times while the Cardinals only gave it away 10 times in the contest. Catholic scored 22 points off Eastern turnovers while the Eagles failed to score off a single Cardinal turnover.
