Catholic Falls to Mary Washington in Final Non-Conference Contest

Box Score

WASINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals posed a threat all night, especially in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the night and eventually succumbed to Mary Washington, 3-0.

Catholic outshot the Eagles 9-3 in the opening stanza and struck the woodwork in the 17th minute when Kiera Price's effort rang off the crossbar and back into play.

Mary Washington did well to absorb pressure, and after bending but not breaking, grabbed the first goal of the contest with just four minutes remaining in the first half to take a slim lead heading into the break.

Catholic forced two saves out of Eagle goalkeeper Ally Holden in the opening six minutes of the second half before Mary Washington doubled its advantage following a set piece. The Eagles were beneficiaries of a bit of luck as Mikaela O'Fallon's low service from the left-edge of the penalty area evaded everybody and went directly into the goal.

Despite outshooting the Eagle 12-10 and earning more corners than their counterparts, the Cardinals were unable to find a goal. Senior Liz Gorman led the way with four total shots and junior Lauren Cerda tallied three, while goalkeeper Maeve Graham made six saves.

Freshman Faith Sawyer played 27 minutes off the bench and looked sharp playing in a wide role. Freshman defender Abby McCall also looked energetic after slotting into the back line while sophomore Savannah Hensley injected some energy into the center of the midfield.

Catholic now turns its attention to its regular-season finale. The Cardinals host the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown on Carlini Field on Saturday in what is a massive Landmark Conference tilt. Catholic would secure a spot in the conference tournament with a victory, while a draw may be enough to clinch a postseason berth depending on results elsewhere. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
