Box Score TOWSON, Md. — The Catholic University men's soccer team put five Goucher on Wednesday night to remain perfect in Landmark Conference play.
Junior Gordie Bernlohr proved a handful for the Gophers, bagging a brace to hit double figures on the season.
It took only five minutes for Catholic to hit the front through Bernlohr. The move started with brilliant defending in the open field by Andrew Lowman. Once Lowman gained possession, the Cardinals countered quickly, eventually serving a ball into the penalty area that found its way through bodies to Bernlohr at the back post. The creative midfielder finished with a clever toe-poke after his initial attempt was saved by the Goucher goalkeeper.
Bernlohr turned provider in the 18th minute when reigning Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week Domenic Caltabiano doubled the Cardinal advantage. Darius Siahpoosh produced a brilliantly-weighted through ball to find Bernlohr who timed his run perfectly before cutting the ball back to an onrushing Caltabiano on the edge of the six-yard area.
The match remained 2-0 until Bernlohr struck again in the 65th minute. This time the roles reserved as Caltabiano fed the midfielder on the left-edge of the penalty, and after cutting in on his right foot, he unleashed a strike that squeezed through Ale Sternini and just over the line.
Catholic added two more tallies in the closing moments of the contest. Senior outside back Francesco Artusa registered his first career point when he assisted Connor Bailey in the 88th minute. The Cardinals were gifted a fifth with just two seconds on the clock courtesy of a Gopher own goal.
Catholic outshot the Goucher 23-5 and earned eight corners to the Gophers' one. Senior Austin Coron earned the clean sheet in the Cardinal goal.
With the victory, the Cardinals move to 9-2-4 on the season and a perfect 5-0-0 in conference play as the team works toward the top seed in the Landmark Conference tournament.
Travis Beauchamp's side will now turn its attention to a Saturday-afternoon contest against Moravian. The Cardinals will hit the road for the final time this season for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Bethlehem.
