Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Catholic University men's soccer team utilized a quick-fire second-half turnaround to defeat Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.
After trailing 1-0 at the break, Catholic scored three goals in the first five minutes of the second half to fly past the River Hawks, 3-1.
The Cardinals produced a whirlwind following the halftime break that Susquehanna just could not deal with. Just 50 seconds of game time separated Darius Siahpoosh's equalizer and Domenic Caltabiano's go-ahead strike.
There were 87 seconds between the whistle to begin the second half and Siahpoosh's team-leading 11th goal of the season that brought the Cardinals level in the match. Caltabiano continued the momentum, switching from provider to goal-scorer in the 48th minute, when he cashed in on a Jack McEvoy helper to complete the turnaround.
Catholic didn't stop there and instead turned the screw, netting a third goal less than two minutes later. Caltabiano provided his third goal contribution of the match when he fed junior Michael Hanlon for his second tally of the season.
The Cardinals second-half flurry came after Susquehanna's first attack of the match yielded an early River Hawk goal. Catholic found themselves behind in the second half after an unforchunate own goal.
Senior Austin Coron produced a clutch save just two minutes after the third Cardinal goal to prevent an immediate River Hawk response, keeping out Max Paczewski's effort that was destined for the bottom-right corner.
Catholic continued to push for a fourth and were only denied by the woodwork. Gordie Bernlohr and Owen Maher struck the left upright in the 59th and 60th minutes, respectively.
Siahpoosh, Bernlohr and Caltabiano were at the heart of the Cardinal offensive as the three combined for 13 total shots and forced River Hawk goalkeeper Gerrit Stech into five saves. Senior Brian Murphy earned his first career start and logged 52 minutes of hard work in a defensive midfield role.
The victory pushes Catholic to 8-2-4 on the season and a perfect 4-0-0 in Landmark Conference play. Travis Beauchamp's men will now turn their attention to a midweek contest against Goucher. The Cardinals will travel to Towson, Md., to face the Gophers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
