Cardinals Beat Drew, Fall to Susquehanna In Landmark Quad Match

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic women's volleyball earned a split during Saturday's Landmark Conference quad match on Franny Murray Court. The Cardinals defeated Drew in four sets before falling to Susquehanna in three sets. 

Senior Brittany Connatser totaled 28 kills while junior setter Sydney Sheppard handed out 62 assists on the day. Catholic sits at 8-10 on the season after its first two Landmark matches of the season. 

Catholic 3-1 Drew (27-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18)

In Saturday's first of four matches on Franny Murray Court, the Cardinals defeated Drew in four sets. Connatser led the offense with 15 kills and received assistance from the Cardinal middle blockers Erin Faughnan and Grace Guerin who tallied 13 kills combined and each hit .312 or better. 

The Cardinals needed a few extra points to take a 1-0 lead, taking the first set 27-25. Catholic fell behind 8-4 and 10-6 before a 5-0 run put Catholic ahead 11-10. Kills from junior Olivia Blondin and Faughnan were sandwiched around an ace from junior Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli to put Catholic ahead. 

Drew retook the lead before three straight kills from Connatser, Faughnan, and freshman Tanya Sichling made it 15-14 Cardinals. Once again Drew took the lead at 21-19 before another 3-0 Cardinal run put Catholic back ahead. Drew tied the match at 25-25 before a service error put the ball in the hands of Isabel Gonzalez-Alvarez who finished off the set with an ace. 

In set two, Connatser's third kill of the set made it 11-8 Catholic before a service ace from freshman Izzy Steinberg forced a Drew timeout. A 7-1 run for the Cardinals extended the lead to 19-12 and forced the final timeout of the set for the Rangers. 

Catholic led 23-17 before a 4-0 run brought the Rangers within two points. Once again, Drew gave away a late point on a servive error and then ended the set that way, giving Catholic a 2-0 lead. 

Catholic led 10-7 in the third set, but a massive Drew run swung the set as they jumped ahead 22-14 before earning a 25-16 third set win. 

It was back-and-forth in set four to start with Catholic taking an 8-7 lead on a Blondin kill and then leading by two after a Drew attack error. Catholic took three of the next four points with Connatser picking up a pair of kills. 

The Cardinals lead became five after back-to-back Drew attack errors made it 15-10. Now leading 21-16, Blondin added another kill and Connatser and Faughnan combined for a block to make it 23-16. Sichling's kill set up match point before Connatser put it away for Catholic, 25-18. 

Connatser had a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs. Sheppard had 34 assists and 11 digs while Hernandez-Ferraiuoli had 32 digs. 

Catholic 0-3 Susquehanna (22-25, 22-25, 19-25)

The Cardinals played a tight match with Susquehanna, losing all three sets by six points or less, but ultimately fell in a sweep to the River Hawks. 

Connaster once again led the attack with 13 kills while Blondin had seven for the Cardinals. Sophomore Brynne Burgess stepped in at libero in sets two and three for Hernandez-Ferraiuoli and added a game-high 17 digs. Sheppard assisted on 28 of the team's 33 kills. 

Catholic led 11-8 in set one after a Sheppard service ace before Susquehanna ripped off a 6-2 run to take a 14-13 lead. The Cardinals led once again at 17-15, but fell behind and never got it closer than two before falling 25-22. 

The Cardinals were red hot early on, taking an 11-5 lead with seven points coming from Connatser and freshman Claire Harris. Susquehanna cut into the deficit, but another Harris kill made it 17-15 before a 3-0 run put the River Hawks ahead. Susquehanna didn't look back taking another 25-22 set win. 

Catholic got within one point at 13-12 in the third and final set, but a 4-0 River Hawk run broke it open and another 5-1 run made it 22-14 Susquehanna en route to a 25-19 final set victory. 

Catholic travels to Juniata on Wednesday night for a single match at 7 p.m. againat a top-ranked opponent in the Eagles.
