CARLISLE, Pa.- Catholic traveled to Pennsylvania on Saturday morning for two non-conference match ups, starting with the host Dickinson, followed by a meeting with Misericordia at 2 p.m. The Cardinals fell in both matches, 3-0.
Match One: Catholic 0, Dickinson 3
Catholic opened the scoring against Dickinson, scoring on an attack error. The Red Devils quickly found their way on the board, and went on to build a strong lead, but the Cardinals stayed close by. Dickinson managed to hold Catholic off, taking set one 25-19.
The Cardinals opened set two with a 3-0 run against the Red Devils. Catholic continued to build on their lead, but Dickinson managed to tie the score at 11, and grew their lead from there. Both teams were going point-for-point up until the final two, which were won by the Red Devils to take the set 25-23.
In set three, Dickinson took the first two points, starting with a service ace followed by a kill. Catholic found their groove, going on a four-point run to take the lead. The Red Devils found points by way of Cardinal attack errors, evening the score at six, then again at seven. With two kills from
Caroline Welsh, and an attack error by Dickinson, Catholic went up again 10-7. The Red Devils found a groove of their own, regaining the lead. The set continued to go back and forth, but Dickinson secured the final two points of the match, winning set three 26-24.
Julia Raab and
Julia Turchiano led the squad against the Red Devils with eight kills apiece. Raab also had the second-most digs with seven, while Turchiano had the most points with 11 as well as two blocks.
Ava Borcky and
Alejandra Garcia each had a pair of service aces, and Garcia had the most digs with eight.
Match Two: Catholic 0, Misericordia 3
Catholic battled hard against Misericordia, searching for their rhythm. The Cougars opened the scoring in the first set, going on a 4-0 run early to establish dominance. The Cardinals capitalized on Cougar errors, earning their first point by way of a service error, followed by an attack error to cut the deficit in half. But Misericordia continued to build on their lead, taking set one 25-14.
Set two started off with a kill from Catholic's
Elianette Escalera to put them on the board. Misericordia took the lead shortly after and began to extend their advantage. Catholic held on, staying within reach, but the Cougars took the set, 25-17.
Misericordia won the first point in set three, but
Maddie Wilkey answered with her second kill of the game to get a point for Catholic. The Cougars had a few solid runs in the third set, taking a significant lead over the Cardinals. Catholic added a few more points to their tally, but Misericordia took the set, 25-14.
Raab led the squad with four kills, while
Marin Stensrud led with five digs. Wilkey had three kills in the match with a solo block and two block assists.
Up next, Catholic will host Mary Washington on Wednesday, September 16 at 6 p.m.
