Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University Field Hockey team celebrated senior day with a comprehensive 7-1 victory over Drew on Saturday afternoon.
The team honored five seniors, all of whom had a direct impact on the positive result.
It was a special day for Hanna Jacobs, who scored her first career goal to open the scoring in the first quarter. Senior Molly McEvoy was dangerous throughout the entire contest playing down the right and found the net twice. Six different Cardinals scored on the day.
After Jacobs opened the scoring, Catholic doubled its lead through Mary Rojack. The freshman stepped up to bury a penalty stroke after a Drew defender illegally stopped the ball on the goalline.
McEvoy then put the Cardinals up 3-0 just 53 seconds later as she raced through on cage and finished the breakaway opportunity.
Drew scored just before halftime to slice into Catholic's lead, but the Cardinals responded swiftly and emphatically after halftime.
Sophomore Niki Micciche scored 46 seconds into the third stanza with a brilliant shot to the back post as she was spinning away from a defender. Senior Liv Canterino then stepped up to finish Catholic's second penalty stroke of the contest before sophomore defender Emma Shallow, again coming from a penalty corner situation.
Catholic added one more in the fourth quarter when McEvoy netted her second of the contest off of a penalty corner. Senior Gracie Burford provided the assist.
Senior goalkeeper Maeve McCarthy started the contest and did not allow a goal, earning her first win of the season.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 1-1 in the Landmark Conference. They will travel to Fredericksburg, Va., to face Mary Washington on Wednesday before returning to Landmark Conference play next Saturday. Opening push back against the Eagles is set for 4 p.m.
