Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by juniors Erin Doherty and Rachel Bussanich, the Catholic University women's basketball team handed Drew its first loss of the season Saturday on Franny Murray Court, 58-52.
The 23rd-ranked Cardinals (11-1, 2-1 LC) posted their third-straight win and seventh in the last 10 against the Rangers who had won a school record 10-straight and were receiving votes in both national polls.
Doherty scored a season-high 21 points, recording her second 20-point game this season and the fourth of her career. She finished three points shy of her career high set in an 81-66 win over Drew at home on March 4, 2021.
Meanwhile, Bussanich totaled her third career double double and second this season with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Senior Amanda Johnson also tied her career-high with 12 rebounds.
Catholic jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter before being limited to just six second-quarter points as Drew took a 26-23 halftime lead.
The Rangers (10-1, 1-1 LC) stretched their lead to as many as six points in the third becore the Cardinals closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to retake the lead, 39-37, heading into the fourth quarter. Doherty scored seven of the team's 16 points in the quarter while Catholic held the visitors to just 3-of-14 shooting.
Led by six points from Sekya Campbell, Drew scored 11 of the first 16 points to start the fourth to go back in front by four, 48-44, but six-straight points by Doherty tied the game at 52-52.
The Cardinals held the Rangers scoreless for the final 3:29 while scoring four of their final six points from the free throw line en route to their third consecutive home win.
Doherty scored 10 points in the fourth and 17 of Catholic's 35 in the second half.
Winners of four-straight, the Cardinals begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Juniata. Tip-off from Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center is at 7 p.m.
