Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University field hockey team won its first game of the season while head coach Rachel Palumbo earned her first career victory with a 2-1 win over Randolph-Macon Wednesday.
The Cardinals (1-2) used two second half goals from senior Katie Murphy to secure the come-from-behind win.
Despite holding a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half, Catholic fell behind 1-0 following a Yellow Jacket goal with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter.
With just two minutes remaining in the third, junior Molly McEvoy found Murphy for a tap-in goal off one of five Cardinal penalty corners in the quarter. The goal was the first of the season for the Murphy.
Both teams combined for nine shots in the fourth before McEvoy and Murphy struck again with less than four minutes remaining. Sophomore Ashley Martin brought the ball down the right side of the field and passed it to McEvoy who beat several defenders before finding Murphy in front for the game-winning goal.
The two goals were a career high for Murphy while senior Maysen Elliott picked up her first win of the season after recording three saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Ursinus for a 2 p.m. start.
