Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - The Catholic University field hockey team dropped a non-conference to Washington and Lee on the road Saturday, 4-2.
The undefeated Generals (5-0), who are receiving votes in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll, got on the board first just under five minutes into the game on a breakaway to take a 1-0 lead.
However, the Cardinals (2-6) responded less than two minutes later as sophomore Ashley Martin recorded her first goal of the season off an assist from senior Katie Murphy.
Catholic took the lead just six minutes later when sophomore Carly Bateman found the back of the cage off a long pass from junior Liv Canterino. Both players picked up their first career points on the play.
Washington and Lee took nine shots in the second period, scoring the game-tying goal with nine minutes remaining on a rebound. Just two minutes later, the Generals took the lead on an unassisted goal, to carry a 3-2 advantage into halftime.
The third period was scoreless as senior Maysen Elliott recorded two of her eight saves while senior Grace Jung recorded her team-leading third defensive save of the season.
W&L added an insurance goal with just under one minute remaining to provide the final margin.
The Cardinals travel to Salisbury on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with the Sea Gulls who are currently ranked at No. 11 in the national poll. Game time is at 6 p.m. The game will mark the Cardinals fifth nationally-ranked opponent in nine games this season.
