WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Catholic University women's tennis team won their first match of the fall season as the Cardinals (1-1) took down the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks at the Dowd Family Tennis Courts, 5-4.
Senior Brooke Simonson and junior Abbey Cassidy opened up the match with a convincing win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Junior Aubree Narus and senior Josie Cost performed just as well at No. 3 doubles to post another 8-3 win and put the Cardinals up 2-1 going into singles play.
Simonson picked up her second win of the day at No. 1 singles with a dominating 6-1, 6-3 win. Senior Olivia Sensenbrenner won the fourth set of the day for the Cardinals with a come-from-behind win at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first game, 1-6, she won the next two 6-4, 6-1 to secure the win.
After the Cardinals dropped the next two sets to the Seahawks, sophomore Marisa Stambaugh battled at No. 6 singles in the deciding set. After winning the first game 6-0 and dropping the second 4-6, Stambaugh clinched the set and match with a 7-5 victory in the third game.
The Cardinals have a quick turnaround, as the team travels to Shanendoah tomorrow, Sept. 19. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
