Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. - Catholic University volleyball junior Brittany Connatser totaled 17 kills and a .344 hitting percentage, but the Cardinals fell in five sets to Widener Friday at Rowan's Esby Gymnasium.
Catholic (1-5) had its third match out of the last four decided by five sets.
Freshman Courtney Pohl posted 10 kills while senior Mackenzie Collier added eight to go along with five digs. Senior Caroline Kelly had 20 digs while junior Alycia Powers had 18 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Mya Sullivan totaled three kills, 19 assists and nine digs.
Collier posted five kills in the first set as the Cardinals battled through 14 ties and six lead changes to post a 25-22 victory. The team posted 11 kills and a .286 hitting percentage.
With the Pride (5-0) leading 18-14, Catholic scored six consecutive points, including four on Widener attack errors and two on kills by Collier. After the Pride took a 21-20 advantage, the Cardinals scored five of the final six points, including set point on Widener's ninth attack error.
After falling behind 9-7 in the second set, Catholic scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 17-11 lead en route to a 25-17 win. Connatser had six kills while Pohl added four as the two combined for 10 of the team's 12 kills and a .368 hitting percentage.
In winning the first two sets, the Cardinals totaled 23 kills and a .281 hitting percentage. However, they had just 24 kills and committed 25 errors over the final three.
By comparison, the Pride had 25 kills and a .130 hitting percentage over the first two sets before totaling 30 kills over the next three while improving their hitting percentage from .071 in the third to .318 in the fifth.
After there were 18 ties and nine lead changes in the first two sets, there were just three ties and Widener never trailed over the final three en route to victories of 25-22, 25-11 and 15-9.
Catholic concludes is trip to Rowan with two matches on Saturday, beginning against the host Profs at 10 a.m. followed by a matchup against Morrisville State at noon.
