WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's tennis team made its home debut on Saturday, posting a 9-0 victory over Juniata at the Marty and Jone Dowd Family Tennis Courts.
"The guys really bounced back after a tough opening match last week," said third-year head coach Nitin Deodhar. "We were able to assess our weaknesses and situations where we needed to execute better and applied them to the practices this week. Fortunately, the guys bought in, put in the work, and it showed today."
Competing at home for the first time in 546 days, the Cardinals (1-1, 1-1 LC) were led by the top tandem of senior Frankie Fortunati and freshman Allan Van Nostrand. The duo began the day with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 singles over William Michelson and Jackson Burnell before posting victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Van Nostrand posted a straight sets win over Burnell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2 while Fortunati rallied from losing the first set to post a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 win over Michelson at No. 1 singles.
Van Nostrand has started his collegiate career with back-to-back victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles.
Catholic sealed its first victory of the season at No. 3 singles where senior Bruno To posted a straight sets win over Keisuke Maeda, 6-1, 6-0 to earn the fifth point of the match. To began the day by partnering with junior James Schmalz to post an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Dom Mazzeo was also a two-time winner on Saturday, earning an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles with senior Christian Papalambros before securing a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Ezenna Emuka.
Schmalz earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles while junior David Brennan was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 5 singles.
Catholic returns to action next Saturday, April 10 when it hosts Moravian beginning at 1 p.m.
