Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - An 8-0 run with four minutes remaining in the second half carried Marymount (Va.) to a 74-69 victory over the Catholic University men's basketball team Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court.

The Cardinals (6-1), who received one vote in Monday's D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, suffered their first loss of the season and were off to their best start since 2011-12.

Sophomore Jesse Hafemeister totaled his first career double double with 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He was one point shy of his fifth career 20-point performance. He had 13 points and six rebounds in the first half as Catholic took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

The Cardinals led 60-59 following a jumper by sophomore Jake Timby with 4:25 left in the second half before Marymount scored eight consecutive points to take their largest lead of the game, 67-60, with 2:49 to play.

Trailing 67-64, Catholic had a chance to tie the game, but missed back-to-back jumpers with just over one minute remaining.

The Cardinals also had an opportunity to make it a one possession game with nine seconds left, but missed a free throw on what could have been a four-point play to keep the deficit at four.

Meanwhile, the Saints went 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 29 seconds to secure their third-straight win in the series and second in-a-row on Franny Murray Court.

Led by back-to-back three-pointers from Timby, Catholic took its largest lead of the game, 30-20, with 3:24 to play in the first half.

Timby and sophomore Jake Melady each finished with 12 points with Melady scoring all 12 on four three-pointers. Sophomore Tommy Kelly had 17 points and five rebounds while sophomore Colby Martins had five rebounds and five assists.

Xavier Reaves totaled 25 points seven rebounds and five steals for Marymount (4-3). He was 12-of-17 from the floor as the Saints scored 32 points in the paint. Montell Cooper had 13 points, six rebounds and five steals.

The Cardinals look to rebound on Saturday when they open Landmark Conference play at home against rival Scranton. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
