Seven Cardinals Score in Semifinal Victory Over Susquehanna

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Seven players registered a point as the Catholic University men's soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout over Susquehanna Tuesday in the Landmark Conference semifinals at Carlini Field.

With the win, the defending champion Cardinals (10-6-2) advance to the conference championship for third consecutive season and eighth overall.

Catholic is now 12-7 in the Landmark Conference tournament, including 7-3-2 in the semifinals.

Junior Darius Siahpoosh scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 7:05 into the game as he scored his team-leading 10th goal of the year on a penalty kick. He has converted all four of his penalty kick attempts this season and has scored a goal in eight of his 16 games, including three of the last four.

Siahpoosh scored in both meetings against the River Hawks (9-8-2) this season, recording the game-tying goal in the 87th minute of the Cardinals' 2-1 overtime victory at Carlini Field on Oct. 23.

Catholic maintained its one-goal lead until the 32nd minute when freshman Ryan Kelly netted his third marker of the year off an assist from freshman Andrew Lowman who picked up his first career point on the play.

The Cardinals led 2-0 after 45 minutes after outshooting Susquehanna, 12-4.

Just like the first half, Catholic struck quickly to start the second, scoring just 6:44 in when freshman Domenic Caltabiano tallied his third goal of the season on feed from sophomore Gordie Bernlohr at the top of the box. Through 17 games, Bernlohr is second on the team with four assists and 16 points.

Firmly in control, the Cardinals capped the scoring when senior Adam Melendez registered his first goal of the season with a header off a cross from freshman Jacob Rocha with 2:35 remaining. Melendez, who wears No. 19, became the 19th different player to score a point for Catholic this season, including the 15th to score a goal.

The River Hawks, who entered the game with the league's top scoring offense with 38 goals, were shutout for just the third time in 19 games while suffering their worst loss of the season.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals recorded their second-straight shutout in the Landmark Conference Men's Soccer Championship after posting a 2-0 victory over Elizabethtown in the 2019 championship game, also at Carlini Field.

Junior Austin Coron finished with two saves to improve his record to 9-3-1, including 6-1-1 against conference opponents.

Catholic will seek its league-leading fifth conference championship on Saturday when it hosts second-seeded Drew at 4 p.m. The Rangers pulled out a 2-1 win in double overtime against Elizabethtown in Tuesday's other semifinal.

The Cardinals have won the two previous postseason matchups against Drew in 2008 and 2018, but Saturday will mark the first time the two teams have met in the championship game. Led by goals from Siahpoosh and Bernlohr, Catholic edged out a 2-1 victory over the Rangers at Carlini Field on Oct. 9. After falling behind 1-0, the Cardinals scored back-to-back goals, including the game-winner from Bernlohr in the 82nd minute.
