Box Score MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Catholic University men's soccer team fell to No. 14 Kenyon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Saturday, 4-1.
The Cardinals (11-7-2), who were making their sixth NCAA tournament appearance and second in as many years, finished the year with at least 11 wins for the third-straight season. Since 2018, the team has posted a 40-16-4 record with back-to-back Landmark Conference championships in 2019 and 2021.
The first half was a defensive battle as neither team could find the back of the net. Despite the Lords holding a 7-3 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless at halftime. Junior Austin Coron made two first-half saves.
The second half was much different as the two teams combined for five goals. Kenyon (16-2-1) scored two goals in the first three minutes to take a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.
After making two more saves, Coron was given a red card in the 59th minute when he fouled a Kenyon player outside of the box on an attempted slide tackle. The Lords quickly answered with the game's third goal one minute later against junior Troy Young.
Catholic finally got on the board just eight seconds later when senior Paul Egan netted his fifth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Gordie Bernlohr who tied Egan with his team-leading fifth assist.
Kenyon, who is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA tournament and eighth-straight, capped the scoring in the 77th minute.
The Lords outshot the Cardinals 16-4 in the second half and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Young finished with five saves in just over 31 minutes of play while Coron had four. Senior Andrew Morris also prevented a goal in the first half to give the team 10 total saves.
