Box Score 2 OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Catholic University volleyball sophomore Olivia Blondin totaled 14 kills and 22 digs as the Cardinals faced a tri-match with Stevenson and Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Senior Mackenzie Collier also had 22 digs to go along with 13 kills.
Stevenson 3, Catholic 1 (25-23, 25-9, 24-26, 25-18)
Connatser totaled a team-high 14 kills while Blondin added nine kills, four service aces and nine digs and Collier had seven kills and team-best 12 digs.
The Cardinals (4-17) fell behind 9-2 in the first set and later trailed by the same margin, 22-15, before scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull within one, 24-23. Connatser totaled four of her six kills in the set during the run while Blondin added one and a service ace. However, following a timeout by Stevenson, the Mustangs sealed the win with a kill by Sarah Straub.
Stevenson scored the first eight points in the second set en route to taking a two-set lead as Catholic had six kills and six attack errors.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third and led by the same margin after a kill by Collier, 18-15. The Mustangs rallied to the score at 20-20 before taking a 24-22 advantage. Looking to close out the set, Stevenson surrendered the final four consecutive points, including three from Blondin on a kill and back-to-back service aces.
The Mustangs (15-4) scored seven of the first 10 points in the fourth set and never trailed while totaling 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
Freshman Courtney Pohl had six kills while junior Alycia Powers had 26 assists and nine digs.
Virginia Wesleyan 3, Catholic 0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19)
Against the Marlins (16-3), Blondin had five kills and a career-high 13 digs while Collier had seven kills and 12 digs.
The Cardinals led 9-6 in the first set before Virginia Wesleyan tied it at 10-10. With the set tied at 16-16, the Marlins ran off nine of the final 12 points, sealing the win on back-to-back kills by Abigail Mahoney.
Catholic held a 6-5 advantage in the second set, but nine consecutive points by Virginia Wesleyan gave the Marlins a lead they would not relinquish.
The third set featured seven ties, the last of which came at 15-15. Four-straight points from Virginia Wesleyan put the team back in front and after the Cardinals pulled back within two at 20-18, the Marlins sealed the match with five of the final six points.
Pohl added six more kills while senior Caroline Kelly had 16 kills to raise her career total to 1,397, three shy of 1,400 and only 49 behind Mary Ellen Ryan '02 for eighth on the program's all-time list.
Catholic has four home matches in five days next week beginning on Monday against Marymount (Va.) at 7 p.m. Earlier this season, the Saints edged out a five-set victory over the Cardinals on Sept. 6 in Arlington, Va.
