Field Hockey Edged by Mary Washington in Double Overtime

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mary Washington scored four minutes into the second overtime to take a 3-2 victory over the Catholic University field hockey team Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium.

The game marked the first double overtime contest for the Cardinals (3-8) since Sept. 22, 2018 when they won at Scranton by the same score.

The Eagles (7-4) got off to a quick start in the first quarter, scoring at 7:11 on their first shot of the night.

Despite taking six shots in the first half and earning five penalty corners, Catholic could not get the equalizer and trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The second half saw action all over the field as both teams combined for three goals on 13 shots.

Sophomore Mary Parker scored her first career goal to tie the game midway through the third quarter when she scored on a rebound after her first shot was blocked off a penalty corner.

Junior Maeve McCarthy totaled two of her five saves in the quarter to keep the score tied going into the final period.

Less than three minutes into the fourth, Maggie Ellis put the Eagles back in front on a rebound following a save by McCarthy.

However, just four minutes later, junior Molly McEvoy scored her first career goal to tie the game for a second time.

Mary Washington's Chloe Billy made two saves in the quarter to preserve the tie and send the game into overtime.

Both teams took five shots apiece in the first overtime with the Cardinals generating two quality chances that resulted in shots that went wide. McCarthy made three saves in the period, including a diving stop on a penalty stroke to send the game into a second overtime.

Neither team was able to get off a shot in the second overtime until Lauren Boucher netted the game-winner just under four minutes in to give the Eagles the win.

Catholic outshot Mary Washington 18-16 and held a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Drew for a Landmark Conference contest beginning at 1 p.m.
