Cards Drop Non-Conference Contest to Washington College

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Washington College scored three of the game's final four goals en route to a 4-3 victory over the Catholic University men's soccer team Tuesday at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (6-5-1) lost for just the third time in the last 19 games at home, falling to 15-3-1 over the last two seasons.

Senior Paul Egan scored the first of the game's seven goals in the seventh minute as he netted his second of the year off a rebound in the box.

The Shoremen (8-4-0) tied the game in the 22nd minute when Cesar Aayon-Fuentes scored his first goal of the season on a cross from the left corner by Ben Strine.

Three of Washington's four goal scorers tallied their first of the season Tuesday, including Strine who netted the game-winner late in the second half.

Catholic quickly answered as junior Darius Siahpoosh scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year off an assist from freshman Jacob Rocha just six minutes later to put the Cardinals back in front.

However, like Siahpoosh, James Strine scored his also picked up his team-best seventh tally of the season in the 42nd minute when he lobbed a ball from midfield over the head of junior Troy Young to tie the game for the second time.

The goal was the first of three-straight for the Shoremen who scored just 3:45 into the second half to take their first lead on Eric Gwadz's first of the year off an assist from Harrison Malone.

Strine gave the visitors a 4-2 lead in the 80th minute before sophomore Connor Bailey scored his first career goal off an assist from freshman Domenic Caltabiano with 3:24 remaining to provide the final margin.

Washington outscored Catholic 3-1 over the final 48:18, outshooting the Cardinals, 11-5, and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

A total of 11 players had at least one point in the game, including six for the Shoremen who were led by three from Ben Strine.

Young made a career-high six saves before leaving the game in the 75th minute. Counterpart Austin Heid needed to make just two saves as only five of the Cardinals' 13 shots were on goal.

Catholic travels to rival Scranton on Saturday where the team is unbeaten in its last six games. The Royals finished the 2019 season ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region with an 11-5-2 record. Kickoff from Weiss Field is at 4 p.m.
