Porter Keys Cardinals' Rally in 5-4 Win Over Montclair State

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University baseball senior Cid Porter had career-high four hits and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth as the Cardinals rallied for a 5-4 win over Montclair State Sunday at Talbot Field.

Catholic (2-2) scored the game's final four runs over the final four innings to post its eighth in the last 10 at home.

Porter, who went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, posted the second four-hit game of his career. He also went 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored in a 9-4 win over Penn State Berks on March 5, 2018.

With the Cardinals trailing 4-3, senior Connor Sullivan led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to center before scoring the tying run on the very next pitch when Porter singled to right. Porter then came around to score the winning run with two outs when he scored on a wild pitch three batters later.

Despite a fielding error to open the top of the ninth and a hit by pitch, senior Jack Ropelewski picked up his first win of the season by retiring the next three-straight batters and stranding the tying run at third.

The Red Hawks (2-1) left 11 runners on base and went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Both teams plated a run in the first before Montclair State scored three unearned runs on two Catholic errors in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Cardinals cut their deficit to one with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a ground out by junior Michael Doody and an RBI-double by senior Nolan Lundholm.

With two hits today, Doody has now hit safely in all four games this season and has four multi-hit games. He is currently hitting .563 with nine hits in 16 at-bats, including three doubles.

Senior Connor Cozad also extended his hitting streak to four with a single in the fourth.

Catholic's first five hitters combined for all 11 of the team's hits, going 11-for-19 with five runs and four RBIs. Sullivan was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

The Cardinals host Hood on Wednesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
