WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team defeated local foe Marymount in a 204-39 dual meet victory on Saturday afternoon at the DuFour Center.
The Cardinals swept the top spots in nine events for the team's sixth meet victory of the season. Gregory McCarthy set a new record in the 100-indivdual medley and Robert McHale set new best scores in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
The Cards got things started right away in the 200-medley relay to pick up 15 points in the meet's first event. Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, Kevin Jay, and George Isaacs teamed up for a winning time of 1:41.05. A second Cardinal foursome consisted of Dan Lawrey, Ryan Kinnon, Brian Aberle, and Joshua Roberts followed with a 1:43.68 relay time.
Ellis Prescott continued his dominance in the 1000-freestyle distance event with a 10:29.84 first-place time, followed by teammate James Verby at 10:53.76.
Matthew Mahon touched first in the 200-freestyle at 1:50.47, followed by McCarthy at 1:52.61 and Thomas Marciano at 2:03.88 for second and third. The sweeps continued as Roberts took first in the 100-backstroke with a time of 56.54, followed by teammates Lawrey and Alec Powers, respectively.
Grunbok kept the sweeps going as he grabbed first in the 100-backstroke with a winning time of 1:03.63, and James Kelly (1:04.06) and Alex Farley (1:04.07) rounded out the top three. Schriefer-Flores touched first in the 50-freestyle sprint event at 21.85, followed by Isaacs (22.03) and Jay (22.61).
Schriefer-Flores continued his dominant afternoon with a win in the 200-backstroke at 2:02.71, and teammates Roberts and Verby took second and third. Lenny Brown touched first in the 500-freestyle at 4:58.59, followed by Prescott (5:02.53) and Nicholson (5:14.42).
Aberle got a win in the 100-butterfly at 54.88, followed by Matt Meade (58.28) and Joe Keller (58.81).
McCarthy set the school's fastest time in the 100-IM with his 55.31 mark. The junior now has six school records including relays.
The Cardinals closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay as Mahon, Brown, Kyle Kreuscher, and Nicholson combined for a time of 1:32.56.
McHale dominated on the boards once again, this time breaking the school record in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. The freshman's 1-meter score of 275.80 and 3-meter mark at 294.85 both are the highest scores set by a Catholic diver.
Before the meet, head coach Paul Waas and his team honored seniors Brian Aberle, Alex Braziel, Will Chester, George Isaacs, Kevin Jay, Dan Lawrey, and Luke Nicholson in the team's final home meet.
The Landmark Conference Championships await the Cardinals after a week off, beginning Friday, February 14. Catholic competes against the rest of the conference over three days of qualifying preliminaries and the finals at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center on Feb. 14-16.
