WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team was edged by Division I opponent Howard on Saturday afternoon in a 162-134 dual meet loss at the DuFour Center Pool.
The Cardinals opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-medley relay as Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, Kevin Jay, and George Isaacs teamed up for a time of 1:40.39.
Ellis Prescott and Lenny Brown made their contributions in the distance events once again, starting with second and third in the 1000-freestyle. Prescott got second at 10:14.25, followed by Brown at 10:24.16 for a total of seven points. Luke Nicholson (1:51.11) and Matthew Mahon (1:51.46) then took second and third in the 200-freestyle to tack on additional points.
Schriefer-Flores earned the team's first event win of the afternoon with a winning time of 54.34 in the 100-backstroke.
Gregory McCarthy touched first for a victory in the 200-butterfly with his a 1:58.04 time.
Isaacs took second in the 50-freestyle sprint with a time of 22.34, followed by teammate Brian Aberle just behind at 22.40.
Schriefer-Flores continued his strong meet with a second-place finish in the 200-backstroke at 2:04.07, and Dan Lawrey trailed for third at 2:04.60.
The Cardinals swept first, second, and third in the 500-freestyle as Prescott touched first with a sub-five minute win at 4:57.63. Brown took second at 5:03.05 and Nicholson touched third at 5:14.46. The trio earned 16 points in the event, collectively.
McCarthy picked up more points with his second-place finish in the 100-butterfly at 53.20.
Catholic closed the meet with a second-place spot in the 200-freestyle relay for four points. Isaacs, Schriefer-Flores, Mahon, and McCarthy combined for a 1:29.80 time.
On the boards, freshman Robert McHale broke out to earn points with first-place finishes in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. McHale got first at 1-meter with his score of 232.95, and first in the 3-meter at 215.15.
Teammate Will Chester took second in both events, earning 203.05 in the 1-meter and 177.08 in the 3-meter. Seamus Koehr grabbed third at the 3-meter with his 122.30 score.
Up next for the Cardinals is the final meet of the year before Landmark Conference Championships, a dual meet against local foe Marymount (Va.). Catholic hosts the Saints on Saturday, February 1 at 2 p.m. at the DuFour Center.
