Cardinals Post 176-86 Meet Victory over Yellow Jackets

RICHMOND, Va. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team earned another dual meet victory Saturday afternoon, defeating Randolph-Macon 176-86, at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

The competition marked the second time Catholic competed against Randolph-Macon this season after the Cardinals took second place out of 12 competing teams in the 2019 Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jacket Invitational with 1294 points in two days of swimming on Nov. 23-24. 

The Cards opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-medley relay to take eleven points. Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores (26.44), Chris Grunbok (28.68), Gregory McCarthy (23.71), and George Isaacs (21.70) combined for a winning time at 1:40.53.

Catholic took the top two spots in the meet's distance event, the 1000-freestyle, as Ellis Prescott finished first at 10:20.53. Teammate Lenny Brown followed in second at 10:29.37. 

Matthew Mahon touched first in the 200-freestyle with a winning time of 1:51.47 to earn nine points. 

The Cardinals then went one-two-three in the 100-breaststroke for a total of 16 points. Grunbok took first at 1:03.78, followed by James Kelly (1:04.08) and Kyle Kreuscher (1:05.91), respectively. The 200-butterfly event yielded nine points as McCarthy (2:02.23), Luke Nicholson (2:04.62), and Kevin Jay (2:08.42) took second through fourth. 

Isaacs touched first in the 50-freestyle sprint at 22:38 and Mahon followed in second at 23.26. Mahon continued his impressive afternoon with a first-place finish in the 100-freestyle with his 50.44 time, followed by Kreuscher at 50.94. 

Catholic took nine more points in the 200-backstroke as Schriefer-Flores (2:01.13), Dan Lawrey (2:06.33) and Joshua Roberts (2:06.50) finished second, third, and fourth, respectively. 

The Cardinals dominated the 200-breaststroke to earn 16 points with the top three spots. Grunbok got another win at 2:20.90, followed by Kelly at 2:22.97 and Alex Farley at 2:24.74.

Prescott and Brown paced the way in another distance event, this time the 500-freestyle, to take 13 points. Prescott eclipsed five minutes for first at 4:59.60 and Brown took second with a time of 5:04.88. 

McCarthy got a win in the 200-individual medley with his time of 2:01.09. The Cards closed the meet with a win in the 400-freestyle relay as Isaacs, Schriefer-Flores, Jay, and Mahon teamed up for a best time of 3:20.45.

Catholic returns home for its next meet on Saturday, January 25 against local foe Division I Howard. The meet time against the Bison is set for 2 p.m.
