Cardinals Fall to Bullets 182-79

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team fell to Gettysburg 182-79 on Sunday afternoon in the team's first meet in the new year. 

The Cardinals competed against a perennial powerhouse in Gettysburg after their annual training trip to Florida and gave some impressive individual swims. 

The Cards took second place to open the meet in the 200-medley relay for four points. Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores, Chris Grunbok, Kevin Jay, and George Isaacs combined for a 1:40.22 time. 

Catholic took second, third, and fourth in the 1000-freestyle distance event to take a total of nine points. Freshman Ellis Prescott led with a 10:16.03 time that marks the fastest out of Landmark Conference swimmers, earning him second place. Lenny Brown (10:31.26) and Luke Nicholson (11:05.47) followed in third and fourth, respectively. 

Schriefer-Flores touched third in the 100-backstroke with his time of 56.08. Grunbok added a third-place finish of his own in the 100-breaststroke at 1:02.94. 

Gregory McCarthy placed second in the 200-butterfly to earn four points with a time of 1:59.20. Isaacs then placed third in the 50-freestyle sprint event at 22.17.

Schriefer-Flores got the team's first event victory in the 200-backstroke with his winning time of 1:59.53. Teammate Joshua Roberts followed in third at 2:05.10.

Grunbok continued his impressive afternoon with a second-place finish in the 200-breaststroke at 2:22.26. Prescott added a third-place finish in the 500-freestyle at 5:02.66. 

McCarthy and Jay went two-three in the 100-butterfly to earn seven points for Catholic. McCarthy touched at 53.74 for second, followed by Jay at 55.17. McCarthy followed up with a third-place finish in the 200-individual medley at 2:01.97. 

The Cardinals closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay as Isaacs, Matthew Mahon, Schriefer-Flores, and Jay teamed up for a 1:29.91 relay time. 

The team stays on the road in its next meet against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Cardinals compete against the Yellow Jackets for a second time this season after the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Nov. 23-24, 2019.
