Cardinals Fall to Scranton in Overtime in Landmark Opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Allie Benadon's second goal of the game with 2:10 remaining in the first overtime gave Scranton a 2-1 victory over the Catholic University field hockey team at Cardinal Stadium Saturday in the Landmark Conference opener for both teams.

The loss snapped an 18-game conference win streak for the Cardinals (4-5, 0-1 LC) who suffered their first regular-season conference loss since a 1-0 loss at Elizabethtown on Oct. 8, 2016. It was also Catholic's first loss in the last 12 games against an unranked opponent.

The Cardinals and Royals (6-3, 1-0 LC) have needed overtime to decide a winner in each of the last two seasons. Last year, Meghan Shallow scored the game-winning goal with 2:45 left in the second overtime in Catholic's 3-2 win at Weiss Field.

The Cards took an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game when sophomore Hannah Bateman scored her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Claire Flannery. Bateman now has two goals and two assists through nine games this season, equaling her output from a year ago in 17 games.

Catholic maintained its one-goal advantage until Benadon scored her first goal of the game and fourth of the season with just 1:32 to play in the first half.

Neither team had a shot or a penalty corner in the third quarter before Catholic totaled six shots and six penalty corners in the fourth.

The Cardinals dominated the first four minutes of overtime, outshooting the Royals 4-0 before Scranton (6-3, 1-0 LC) tallied the next four. After Amelia Sharp hit the post, both Brianna Witt and Nicolette Keale fired shots wide before Benadon forced a turnover and slotted a shot to the far right corner for her first game-winning goal of the season and the third of her career.

Sophomore Maysen Elliott had one save for Catholic while her counterpart, Clarie McAllister, had three for the Royals. Lauren Earnshaw also had a defensive save.

The Cardinals host No. 4 Salisbury on Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium beginning at 6 p.m.
