Cardinals Clinch Landmark Postseason Berth With 16-7 Win

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University men's lacrosse freshman Joey Rockovich totaled a career-high six points and four assists while freshman Sean Baudo added four goals as the Cardinals won their fourth-straight game with a 16-7 win over Goucher Wednesday at Carlini Field.

By winning its fifth game out of the last six, Catholic (8-5, 4-0 LC) secured a spot in next month's Landmark Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship which begins on Wednesday, May 1.

The Cardinals totaled a season-best 55 shots, the fourth time this year they have had at least 50. They are 3-1 in those contests. The team's 16 goals are its most since March 3, 2018 in an 18-6 win over New England College at home. They are also the most goals Catholic has scored in a Landmark Conference contest since March 21, 2015 when it won at Merchant Marine, 16-6.

Rockovich led 11 Cardinals scored at least one point, including freshman Mike McShea who netted his first career goal off the opening faceoff while senior Corey Katzmann, freshman Archer Rymiszewski and freshman Tommy Welch each picked up their first assists of the season.

Rockovich also scored a man-down goal in the third quarter, the Cards' first such goal since April 2, 2016 in a 12-5 win at Drew.

Led by a goal and two assists from Rockovich and two goals from Baudo, Catholic led 5-2 after the first quarter before adding five goals in the second and five more in the third to take a 15-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

In addition to his first career goal, McShea also won 16-of-20 faceoffs while collecting 13 ground balls and dishing out one assist. He only won 12 of 14 first-half faceoffs because he was whistled for two violations, one in each quarter. Led by McShea and freshman Collin Stein, who was 4-of-6, the Cardinals won all but three of the first 20 faceoffs in the game, only losing those three on violations.

Goucher's first faceoff win that wasn't by foul or violation didn't come until the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter.

After scoring his first career goal at Drew on Saturday, Rymiszewski totaled a career-best four points in his fourth career game with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Ryan Gilfillan also scored a career-high two goals.

Junior Alex Mulyk made eight saves over the first three quarters before giving way to sophomore Kevin Malone and freshman Owen Hopkins in the fourth.

Zephan Harnish led the Gophers (4-8, 0-4 LC) with three goals while Alex Shields totaled 22 saves.

Today's win sets up a Landmark Conference showdown for Catholic on Saturday when it hosts Scranton on Senior Day. Entering tonight's home game against Drew, the Royals are also unbeaten in league play at 2-0. Opening faceoff is at 1 p.m.
