BALTIMORE, Md. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team defeated Landmark Conference foe Goucher in a 197-57 dual meet victory on Saturday afternoon at the Von Berries Aquatic Center.
Now on a three-meet win streak, the Cardinals took first place in all but one event in the meet and swept the top three spots in six events for a comfortable conference meet victory. The Cards got things started right away in the 200-medley relay to pick up 15 points in the meet's first event.
Dan Lawrey (28.17), Ryan Kinnon (28.57), Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores (25.28), and Kevin Jay (22.95) combined for a winning time of 1:44.97. A Cardinal foursome consisting of Alec Powers, Alex Farley, Luke Nicholson, and Thomas Marciano finished second at 1:47.83.
Catholic went one-two in the 1000-freestyle distance event up next, as Ryan Iosim (12:09.39) and Matthew Van Lew (12:26.63) finished first and second, respectively. Schriefer-Flores won the 200-freestyle after that at 1:52.70, followed by teammate Joshua Roberts (1:56.52).
The first sweep of the day came in the 100-backstroke when Ellis Prescott touched first at 58.13 as the only swimmer under one minute, and Powers (1:00.64) and Alex Braziel (1:02.80) rounded out the top three.
Chris Grunbok (1:03.67) and George Isaacs (1:04.34) finished first and second in the 100-breaststroke, and then Gregory McCarthy won the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:04.89.
Matthew Mahon touched first again in the 50-freestyle sprint event at 22.97. Then Isaacs topped the 100-freestyle at 50.63, followed by McCarthy (51.16) and Caleb O'Brien (57.87) for another Catholic sweep.
Prescott led the charge on another Cardinals' sweep in the 200-backstroke. The freshman from Las Vegas, Nev. touched at 2:05.68, and teammates Roberts (2:05.78) and Braziel (2:22.53) came in second and third.
Mahon showed his versatility by winning the 500-freestyle distance event at 5:11.11 and teammate Lenny Brown touched after him at 5:17.12. Nicholson touched first in the 100-butterfly at 58.04 while Joe Keller (59.16) and Powers (1:01.82) rounded out the sweep.
Kevin Jay represented the Cardinals in the top three by winning the 200-IM with a time of 2:07.89, beating the next finisher by almost five seconds.
Catholic ended the meet with a sweep in the 200-freestyle relay to add 15 more points. Lawrey, Kyle Kreuscher, Iosim, and McCarthy teamed up to win with a time of 1:33.43.
The Cardinals will compete next in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College on Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24.
