Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America baseball team opened the 2018 season in style as they earned two wins over Cabrini with both coming in the bottom of the seventh on walk-off hits, 3-2 and 6-5.
In game one, senior Brennan Cotter ripped an RBI single to walk off with win number one before senior Jack Hennessy added an RBI single of his own to close out the second victory.
In game one junior pitchers Jon Mierzwa and Collin Brown combined to strike out 14 batters in seven innings and allowed just two hits.
Cabrini was able to score two runs on a fielder's choice and an error to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but junior Bailey Lewis tied it up as he launched his first home run of the year in the sixth inning to set up Cotter's heroics in the seventh.
Senior Danny O'Hagan and junior Ryan Tracy each had two hits in game one with O'Hagan scoring the clinching run and Tracy providing the first RBI of the day for Catholic.
The odds were further stacked against Catholic in game two as they faced a 5-1 hole in the fourth inning.
The Cards found their rally in the fifth as freshman Michael Doody came in to pinch hit with the bases loaded and delivered with a two-RBI double. Hennessy followed with a sacrifice fly before Catholic tied it up as rookie pinch-runner Christian Jones sped from second to home on a wild pitch.
Hennessy then did it again in the seventh to finish the game 3-for-3 as he plated sophomore Cid Porter for the W.
Senior Anthony Ferlise also went 3-for-3 in game two and added a run and an RBI.
Rookie pitcher Ethan Risse came on in relief and went two strong innings for his first career win with four strikeouts to just one hit. Cardinal pitchers struck out eight batters in the second game.
