WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University field hockey team's impressive 2018 campaign came to an end on Wednesday afternoon in a 1-0 loss to Scranton in a Landmark Conference semifinal.

Both teams had strong defensive performances in the scoreless first half only allowing four total shots. Catholic outshot the Royals, recording three of the four shots. With only four minutes left, sophomore Jess Waite created a great opportunity as she broke through Scranton's defense on a fast break. Waite then connected with freshman Katie Murphy for a great shot, but it was saved by Royal's goalie Jenny Cyr.  

Scranton had a quick start early into the second half, but the Cardinals defense of junior Nicole Tsiaras, freshman Grace Jung, and junior Carly Philbin stepped up to not allow a shot.

Catholic then recorded four shots in three minutes, along with earning four penalty corners. The Cards showcased their abilities off of a corner inserted by senior Graceton Griffith to senior Hannah Schied, who passed it to Tsiaras at the top of the circle for a shot that missed just right of the post.

The Royals then scored the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead with 11 minutes to go. The goal would stand as the game-winner for Scranton.

Sophomore Kim McGroary tallied two saves for the Cardinals. 

Scranton will travel to the No. 3-seed Susquehanna, who also won its semifinal game Wednesday, 1-0, to decide the conference champion this Saturday, November 3.
