Cardinals Close Out Regular Season With 3-2 Win

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer teamed ended its regular season campaign with a 3-2 victory Saturday evening over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays at Cardinal Stadium.

The match got going early with two goals in the span of fifty seconds. The Cardinals (10-4-3, 5-1-1 LC) opened the scoring in the 4th minute when sophomore Maggie Moorcones fired a shot from the right side to beat the keeper. A throw-in assist from junior Reagan Sharkey gave the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Blue Jays (6-8-2, 3-4 LC) equalized less than a minute later. Sophomore Halle Green answered with a goal of her own in the 12th minute. Her effort from the top of the penalty box went into the top left corner for her third goal of the season.

Shortly after the halftime break, junior Grace Boras found space on the right wing and buried a shot off the bottom of the crossbar into the net to give Catholic a 3-1 lead. Sharkey earned her second assist of the game with a long through ball from midfield. Boras' goal was her seventh, tying the team high with junior Elizabeth Johnson

The Blue Jays pulled a goal back in the 61st minute, but the Cardinals held on for a 3-2 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made five saves to earn her ninth win of the season. Catholic outshot Elizabethtown 21-16 and took more corner kicks, 8-4. Moorcones led all players with six shots, four on target, including her sixth goal of the year.

Because of an extensive tiebreaker process, Catholic finishes with the No. 3 seed, just behind Susquehanna (12-3-2, 5-1-1 LC). The Cardinals will compete in the Landmark seminfinal matchup on Tuesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. against Susquehanna.
