Cardinals Defeat Royals in First Landmark Weekend

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Catholic University men's swimming & diving team performed well in its Landmark Conference meets this weekend, defeating Marywood 196-85 on Friday and Scranton 148-114 on Saturday. 

The Cardinals (3-1) opened the Scranton meet with a second-place finish in the 200-medley. Gregory McCarthy (25.62), Chris Grunbok (27.66), Kevin Jay (23.69), and George Isaacs (22.05) combined for a 1:39.02 time. 

James Verby followed up with a win in the 1000-freestyle (10:41.72). Daniel Taylor (1:49.68) and Sam Hicks (1:51.83) took first and second in the 200-freestyle. Taylor also won the 100-freestyle event with a 49.15 time. 

Freshman Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores had the top time in the 100-backstroke (54.69) and played his part in the winning 200-freestyle relay to end the meet with a relay-best 21.71 time.

Sophomore Gregory McCarthy won four events over the weekend, including the 200-butterfly with a winning time of 2:00.69 and a first-place finish in the 200-individual medley (1:59.22). He added top finishes in both the 100 and 200-breastroke against the Pacers. 

The men ended the Marywood meet with a top-three sweep in the 400-freestyle relay. Caleb O'Brien, Taylor, Dan Lawrey, and Kyle Kreuscher combined for the best time of 3:31.31.

On the boards, Will Chester finished second on the 1 and 3-meter boards with diving scores of 150.50 and 126.40, respectively. 

The team is back in action for a Landmark meet on the road against Elizabethtown on Saturday, November 10 at 1 p.m.
