Moorcones' Brace Leads Cardinals Past Eagles, 5-0

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over the Juniata Eagles on Saturday afternoon to pick up its third Landmark Conference win of the season.

The five-goal shutout victory is the team's largest conference shutout since the Cardinals had a pair of 6-0 wins over Juniata and Drew in October 2016.

Catholic was led by sophomore midfielder Maggie Moorcones, who scored the match's first two goals to put the Cardinals ahead. In the 13th minute, Moorcones fought for a loose ball in the penalty area, beat a defender, and tapped it by a diving goalkeeper to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Moorcones struck again in the 29th minute after receiving a pass from Bridget Buckley, as she floated a shot from 20 yards just under the crossbar into the net. The Sterling, Va. native now has five goals this season, matching her total from all of last year.

The Cardinals added a third goal just before halftime off a corner kick taken by Daniella Montesano. Freshman Julia Palumbo got on the end of the cross and finished with a header for her first career goal.

There was no letdown from Catholic after the halftime break in play. Just twenty seconds into the second half, Buckley grabbed another assist, finding sophomore Meghan Corso who cut inside and finished with the first touch she took for her first goal of the year.

The Cardinals added a fifth and final goal in the 51st minute when sophomore Halle Green controlled a loose ball after a corner kick and lifted a shot over the keeper's head from the top of the penalty box.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made two saves in 63 minutes of action to earn her seventh win in goal this season. Freshman Marykate Stack got her first career action in goal for Catholic, and made one save in 27 minutes of play.

The Cardinals' next match is Tuesday, October 16, on the road against McDaniel College at 3:30 p.m.
