Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women’s soccer team fell 3-2 in a hard-fought match to McDaniel College on Wednesday afternoon.
Evenly matched, the Cardinals and Green Terror each took 15 shots throughout the 90-minute game. Catholic held its midweek, nonconference opponent scoreless through the first 70 minutes.
The Green Terror struck two unanswered in the 71st and 76th minutes to take a 2-0 advantage.
Nearly five minutes later, the senior Alexa Povelaitis scored back-to-back with assists from classmate Andrea Jablonskyj to equalize the contest.
The duo’s first strike came in the 81st minute when Jablonskyi crossed the ball from the right wing to the feet of Povelaitis who took two touches past a McDaniel defender and ripped a shot into the back of the net. Just two minutes later, Jablonskyi lobbed the ball into the box from 35-yards out. The pass landed on the head of Povelaitis as she sent it into the back right post.
To avoid overtime play and secure the victory, McDaniel converted its final goal at the 88:54 mark.
Catholic’s freshman keeper, Nina Fernandez made her first career start and collected an outstanding six saves. Nine Cardinals took shots during the match as sophomore Elizabeth Johnson tallied three, and Povelaitis along with freshmen Halle Green, Maggie Moorcones and Bridget Buckley each took two.
The Cardinals gear up to host Landmark opponent Drew University on Saturday, October 20 at 12:30 p.m.
