Box Score WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America field hockey team was victorious in its season-opener at home against Washington & Lee on Friday night, 2-0. The shutout win gives first-year head coach Heidi Lewis a W in her first career game coached.
Catholic was able to control possession, outshooting the Generals, 14-4, while registering 12 penalty corners to six. The Cardinals also scored in each half.
In addition to Coach Lewis' win in her debut, the story was senior forward Morgan Druce. Druce returned to the field a year and a day since tearing her ACL in the first game of last season.
Druce made the most of her return, scoring the gamewinner in the first half, showing she is back to finish her career strong.
Catholic got is insurance goal late in the second as rookie Katie Anderson's shot on goal set up sophomore Graceton Griffith for the put-back.
The Cardinals' defense looked strong all game, holding Washington & Lee to just four shots.
Junior goalkeeper Sophia Hamilton made sure nothing got through, as she stopped three shots on goal for the shutout victory.
The Cardinals play on the road against Gettysburg on Tuesday, but return home next weekend to take on Rowan on Saturday before facing Rhodes on Sunday. Both games are slated for noon.
