Box Score WASHINGTON - On Saturday afternoon, Head Coach J.P. Sousa of The Catholic University of America earned his 150th career win as the Cardinals topped the Seagulls of Salisbury University, 3-2, in overtime.
Senior Lindsay Aleman notched the gamewinner with just 50 seconds remaining in the first overtime period after a shot from freshman Grace Boras ricocheted off the crossbar. With win the Cardinals remain undefeated (5-0) in 2016 and handed the Seagulls their first loss of the year (1-1-3).
During regulation, the Seagulls struck first with a goal in the 10th minute. The Cardinals attacked back, equalizing in the 11th minute with a goal from senior Jennifer Delasco, assisted by sophomore Taylor Pisk. Catholic looked to open up the game taking six additional shots in the first half. Unable to advance the score, the Cards and Gulls took the halftime intermission with one goal apiece.
Following the break, Catholic took the lead in the 61st minute as junior Nia Gomez chipped the ball to freshman Elizabeth Johnson who fired it into the net giving the Cards a 2-1 advantage.
The Cardinals maintained the lead for the next 22 minutes. The Seagulls, unwilling to go down without a fight, tied the game in the 84th minute with a header from Emma Faust off a corner kick. With a 2-2 score at the end of regulation, the teams headed into extra time.
Aleman took seven shots throughout the 100-minute contest, putting the ball in the goal when it mattered the most to record her first gamewinner of 2016.
The Cardinals outshot the Seagulls 24-12 during the contest and were each awarded four corner kick opportunities.
Junior Ally Marcello and sophomore Christina Peyroux split time in the net. Marcello made one first half save while Peyroux four saves during the final 54:10 minutes of play.
The Cardinals will play at CUA Soccer Field when they host Mary Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m.
